The Armenian Environmental Network (AEN) is very happy to be granted the opportunity to continue our #WarOnWaste campaign on GlobalGiving. We have just received your donations from Global Giving and are about to make our first step in producing PSAs. From our total funding goal of $15,525 we have raised $1,310. Take a look at our project in Hrazdan city, where we have already started to contribute to the general goal of our campaign.

On July 23, 2014, with the help of a group of 38 volunteers, AEN carried out a cleanup of a communal park in Hrazdan city, Kotayk region. After the cleanup, volunteers created a colorful tile mosaic on a concrete wall and painted signage to promote keeping the park clean.  Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the park has been a neglected place and it is often used as a dumping ground by many locals for their household waste; there are a number of abandoned buildings in the park that are full of garbage. As a result, there is no public sense of ownership of the park, and we hope we can foster a renewed love for the space.

This was a prominent event in the city as a cleanup like this hasn’t been carried out in years. For the first time, trash has been removed from the abandoned buildings. Local children playing in the park were excited to join our volunteers to help with the project.

Shortly after, on August 15, we placed a playground structure that was built from recycled metals and tires in the communal park. With the help of the community in Hrazdan we then painted it with vibrant colors. For the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union, families have been regularly visiting the park as a place of social gathering. Finally, there is a green space for them to come and relax without commuting to Yerevan, the capital city.

Thank you for your support in our #WarOnWaste campaign. Stay tuned for future developments and please continue to support by helping us spread the word.
