In 2024, ABConservation Palawan team developed an educational programme in a school. The goal was to educate students in one class per year about protecting binturongs and the environment. The new plan for 2026 involves reaching more Filipino schools and spreading the message to many more children. By focusing solely on our little protege, we can bring attention to the importance of protecting this considered endangered species in the Philippines. However to reach that goal, we need your help!
Our planet is facing many threats such as pollution or deforestation. Binturongs population decline is a result of these ecological disasters, despite the fact that this species is vital to the future of many plants as a seed disperser. Now is the time to take initiatives. As Robert Swan OBE said, "the greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it". It is our duty to be more respectful towards nature and it is essential to impart it to young people in schools.
The new educational programme in schools has two objectives. First, developing knowledge about the binturong, its natural ecological role and the importance of its protection for the Filipino forests. It is already considered Vulnerable globally, better not to have it become Endangered. Then, raising awareness in a sustainable way among as many students as possible. Generating curiosity about the biodiversity around us also means realising its importance and how we need to protect it.
By involving more schools year-round, we can educate hundreds of students about the importance of conserving biodiversity and the environment. With the project we could also make teachers more aware of the threats that binturongs face and how we can counter them in our daily lives. Teaching children to be more environmentally conscious will lead this future generations to comprehend better how to preserve the fragile Filipino ecosystems. Indeed, better understanding results in better protection.
