Sustainable fisheries management is vital for livelihoods and marine biodiversity in southeast Madagascar. Through Project Oratsimba, SEED Madagascar empowers coastal communities to protect marine resources and build resilience. During World Environment Day in June, 380 participants in Sainte Luce discussed Locally Managed Marine Area (dina) regulations, reinforcing the local commitment to sustainable fishing.
SEED’s collaboration with Marine Management Committees (MMCs) has strengthened patrols and surveillance efforts. A cross-visit between MMCs in Sainte Luce and Elodrato in July facilitated knowledge sharing, while community needs assessments explored opportunities for LMMA expansion. Despite funding constraints halting plans in Ankaramany, efforts continue in other areas.
To further support fishers, the Participatory Monitoring Programme (PMP) resumed in April, collecting critical data on fishery health. Between January and October, 315 landings effort surveys and 90 catch composition surveys were conducted, guiding adaptive management strategies. Two community data feedback sessions in Sainte Luce enabled fishers to validate trends and discuss priorities for the 2024 fishing season.
Looking ahead, SEED’s collaboration with Stanford University will contribute to global fisheries research in 2025. Through Project Oratsimba, SEED Madagascar is ensuring that coastal communities have the tools and knowledge to sustain their livelihoods and marine ecosystems.
