Summary

The rural villages on southeast Madagascar rely heavily on three livelihood methods - beekeeping, fishing and reed weaving. Support this Christmas will allow us to buy more lifejackets to keep the fishers safe in the increasingly dangerous conditions at sea, give training to beekeepers whose apiaries are at threat from deadly parasites, and deliver literacy education to women involved in mahampy weaving, allowing them to independently monitor the most effective growth techniques in the wetlands.

Challenge

We're seeking support to protect both livelihoods and the environment they rely upon in rural Madagascar. Increasing unpredictability in the climate impacts how rural communities generate their income, with traditional methods no longer proving sufficient in creating a sustainable livelihood. The knock-on effect of this has lead to rises in the prices of staple foods and a lack of access to education, both concerns we are getting reports of from individuals in the rural villages.

Solution

Raise for Resilience will seek to generate funds to further support these communities at threat, focusing on three leading livelihoods in the region - beekeeping, reed weaving and fishing. The funds will allow us to increase the reach of our projects, giving more people access to necessary safety equipment, education classes, and financial resilience training sessions. These initiatives go beyond responding to emergenci, but ensure that the projects are long-term and responsive to sudden shocks.

Long-Term Impact

The appeal not only is an opportunity to support the beekeepers, fishers and weavers already involved with our projects, but will also allow them to grow, providing access to more individuals, families and communities. With additional support, we can host more training sessions to address environmental related concerns to specific livelihoods, provide much needed equipment, and ensure that the threats of future sudden shocks to climate or finances are less devastating.
