Project Report: Juba & Environs Rain Catchers: Health from Above
In the vibrant but rapidly growing city of Juba and its surrounding areas, clean water remains a precious, hard-to-reach commodity for thousands of vulnerable families. The current situation on the ground presents severe challenges: communities face a dual burden of rising waterborne illnesses and the exorbitant costs of purchasing clean water from commercial tankers. During the dry spells, the struggle intensifies, forcing women and young girls to walk long distances or rely on unsafe water sources. Our initiative, Health from Above, seeks to break this cycle by tapping into a free, abundant resource—rainwater—transforming rooftops into clean, sustainable lifelines that provide immediate relief and long-term health security right at the doorstep of those who need it most.
To understand the profound human impact of this project, one only needs to look at mothers like Mary, a resident of the Juba outskirts. Every single day, Mary faces the agonizing choice of spending her meager daily earnings on clean water or using unsafe water to cook for her children. A simple rainwater harvesting system installed on her home would mean her children stay healthy, her daughters stay in school instead of fetching water, and her household income can be redirected toward food and education. While the physical infrastructure consists of gutters and storage tanks, the actual output is human dignity, health, and resilience. We are driven by the vision of a Juba where no child falls sick from preventable waterborne diseases simply because of where they live.
While our determination to deliver clean water remains unwavering, SSGID did not manage to mobilize the required funding during this specific reporting period to scale our installations as planned. However, a temporary gap in funding does not dim our vision or lessen the urgent need on the ground. We are actively reaching out and requesting individual donors, forward-thinking foundations, and international organizations to stand with us and support this project. By partnering with SSGID through GlobalGiving, your generosity will directly translate into clean water systems, healthier communities, and a brighter, more secure future for the families of Juba. Together, we can turn the promise of "Health from Above" into a life-saving reality.
with gratitudes and thank
