The Southern Highlands of Tanzania continue to experience the effects of climate change, including unpredictable rainfall patterns and prolonged droughts that disrupt local ecosystems and community livelihoods. One of the most affected resources is the edible orchid species, which play both ecological and economic roles for surrounding communities. These climatic shifts have increasingly hindered the orchids’ natural growth cycles, posing a serious threat to their sustainability. In response, the project promotes rainwater harvesting (RWH) as an adaptive measure to ensure consistent water availability for conservation activities and community use.
Since the initiation of the project, significant progress has been made in awareness creation, stakeholder engagement, and preliminary site assessments for RWH infrastructure installation. The community-based conservation groups, local authorities, and environmental stakeholders have demonstrated strong commitment and enthusiasm toward the project. Technical designs for the proposed rainwater harvesting systems have also been completed, laying the foundation for effective implementation once adequate resources are secured.
However, despite the positive momentum, the financial resources raised so far remain insufficient to fully operationalize the planned RWH systems and conservation activities. The funds collected to date have supported early-stage activities such as consultations, baseline assessments, and preliminary capacitybuilding sessions, but they fall short of the level required for infrastructure procurement and construction. The gap between current funding and the project’s financial needs has slowed progress, underscoring the urgency of mobilizing additional support.
Fundraising efforts continue actively through partner outreach, proposal submissions, and engagements with potential donors who share an interest in climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and community empowerment. We remain optimistic that with enhanced support, the project will soon transition from preparatory work to tangible onground implementation. The continued interest expressed by existing and potential partners signals a shared recognition of the importance of this intervention in protecting both natural resources and community livelihoods.
In light of the funding shortfall, we kindly appeal to our esteemed funders and partners to continue supporting and championing this initiative so we may collectively reach the required financial target. Strengthening rainwater harvesting capacity and ensuring the conservation of edible orchids is a timely intervention that will enhance environmental resilience and sustain the socioeconomic wellbeing of communities in the Southern Highlands. We look forward to continued collaboration and the realization of the project’s full impact.
