Our Hospital needs to acquire a new accelerator, which would allow offering new treatment techniques to oncological patients from across Colombia. The number of patients diagnosed with oncological pathologies is constantly increasing, and approximately 50% to 60% of the patients suffering from cancer will need radiotherapy at one of the stages of their medical treatment. By raising this money, we will be able to give our patients the opportunity to undergo the best medical treatment in a timely.
With the growing life expectancy in the worldwide context, as well as diverse genetic and environmental factors, the cancer cases occurring every year have increased on a regular basis both globally and locally. In Colombia, 462,867 active cancer cases have been reported, plus 46,870 new cases and, in the Department (State) of Antioquia, there were more than 6,400 new cancer cases, which translates into a rate of 105 people suffering from cancer for every 100,000 inhabitants in our region.
This issue could be solved by acquiring state-of-the-art technology that would allow the Hospital to keep offering people a life opportunity by means of effective and efficient treatments for their oncological diseases. A new accelerator will give our Hospital the chance to assist an average of more than 90 patients a day, thus transforming the lives of many families.
With the projected rise in the number of cancer cases in both Antioquia and Colombia, as well as around the world, a 70% increase in the number of cancer patients is expected for the next six to eight years. Thus, by acquiring this new technology, we will be able to assist more than 5,000 patients from Antioquia and more than 30,000 from all across the country over the coming years.
