Agriculture for the Aged Project (AfAP) is an economic growth centered project that will accelerate income generation for over 300 older persons and over 100 community youth. AfAP approach is for older persons to come together, lease land every year that covers two farming seasons and engage in the farming of maize and beans in select Kenyan counties of Narok and Kakamega.
Older people in Kenyan communities are increasingly living longer. The Kenyan government provides cash transfers to those above 70 years but registration for legible older persons is often along wait. This makes income for older adults difficult to guarantee at an age where health is a constant challenge due to high demand of chronic illnesses and no guaranteed source of income or insurance.
Agriculture for the Aged Project will see community older persons whether in government cash transfer or not have extra income and revenue source from farming of maize and beans. This will provide a source of income to the older persons, improve nutrition and health care access, provide employment opportunities for youths who are contracted to work on the farms as well as promote an intergenerational dialogue to reduce on widening disconnect between the young and the old
The project will improve the livelihoods of over 300 older persons and more than 100 community youths. Importantly, farm income will guarantee revenue stream in old age for better health access, food security for improved nutrition for older persons, as well as sensitize older people and the community to engage in agriculture as opposed to selling their land and Build Intergenerational Interventions in the community key to combatting ageism and abuses imposed on older persons.
