The Esila (for girls in Maasai) project supporting vulnerable Kenyan girls with radio education is going well. We have heard from our frontline partners that the portable Fenix radio-lights distributed last year are making a helpful and positive difference to girls in poor families. None had radios at home, so the whole family can also benefit.
These are girls who are not in class due to family responsibilities, distance from a school or their periods. The cost of buying sanitary pads is prohibitively expensive for parents and is one of the leading reasons why girls don’t progress to the next grade. The radios were distributed along with sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene education.
The radio-lights are distributed to those girls most in need in far flung schools. They are not only able to listen to school lessons when not in class, they can use the light at night to do homework or walk safely to the toilet. And there are plenty of wild animals and snakes in rural Maasai areas.
We're headed to Kenya later this month to visit the project and to speak to the girls, their teachers and their families about the impact. Our next report will be filled with stories and images. We can't wait!
