Summary

MTW uses the methodology of experiential education or 'learning through play' to encourage a more active teaching style in local and government schools, in the neglected, peri-urban, Ga West District of Ghana. We believe in leveling the access to quality education, to build sustainable development in the future. We run 2 programmes Get Local and Get Global to provide students aged 10-15 yrs with a Global Citizenship Education that uses the UN's Sustainable Development Goals as learning themes.

Challenge

It is well documented that access to quality education reduces poverty, improves livelihoods, and prepares youth for the complex world we live in. However as much of the education in Ghana is by 'rote learning' a young person's ability to think creatively is limited. Young people may go on to succeed in examinations and have qualifications and degrees, but evidence shows that the softer skills, life-skills are needed for employment in our growing world.

Solution

Our Global Citizenship Education programmes use the UN's Sustainable Development Goals as learning themes. Both programmes are designed and delivered by local facilitators to positively influence classroom practice away from rote learning methods to critical engagement through hands-on problem-solving activities. We utilise experiential education methodology or 'learning through play' where students are engaged in a project from start, to stimulate individual and group critical thinking.

Long-Term Impact

When individuals are given the opportunity and trust to ask questions, think outside the box and develop their own self worth they are able to maximise their contribution to addressing global challenges through actions that they can take in their local area. " I have noticed an improved academic performance, students report to school on time, they ask intelligent questions, ask questions outside of their environment, they ask Global questions " Class Teacher, Medie International School, Ghana
