Progress Report

By Ayomikun Sonuga | Development and Partnerships Officer

Dear Donors,

We are currently at the substructure stage of our school construction project at Ogunpa Lunloye. This stage has taken longer than expected due to several challenges, primarily related to the constant increase in the cost of raw materials, driven by the high rate of inflation in the country. Additionally, transportation costs have significantly impacted our progress, especially given the remote, riverine location of the site, which is far from Lagos. Despite these challenges, we are recording great success on the project.

Key Updates:

  • Foundation Work: We have successfully dug the foundation and purchased over 170 bags of cement, which have been delivered to the site for the foundation construction. We have also sourced sharp sand and initiated block/brick moulding onsite using a local block maker to save on costs and time.

  • Challenges:
    • Weather Impact: Heavy rains in July and August have slowed our work considerably, as the riverine nature of the area exacerbates these delays. The road leading to the site has become slippery and marshy, making it difficult for large trucks to access the area.

Next Steps:

To ensure we can begin construction of the substructure next week, we are coordinating to have all necessary materials and resources in place. We are carefully planning to minimise any further delays and address the challenges posed by the site’s location and weather conditions.

We are excited to report that we recently received a generous $5,000 donation from a kind donor to help cushion the impact of the inflation and ensure the substructure is completed on schedule. Despite the delays, we have made significant progress in preparing the site for the next phase of construction.
