This Project will offer twice monthly sessions of Story telling, puppet theatre and reading mediation to 5,200 elementary school children to improve the quality of their education. It will be delivered by 20 specially trained local high school children.
Educational quality in Brazil is very poor: whilst it was the 7th largest economy in the world in 2012, it scored 54th out 65 in language testing according to PISA. In 2011 50% of all Brazilians had not read a book in the previous 3 months. The children of Eldorado in Brazil live in great poverty with very under-resourced schools - their first contact with books will be with a school textbook. Children who do not enjoy reading and using their imagination are unlikely to achieve.
20 teenagers from the children's own community deliver exciting story telling, puppet theatre and reading mediation sessions at least twice a month to the 5,200 children in 8 partner elementary schools. These sessions are delivered during school hours, during class time.
In evaluations done with school head teachers, they have stated clearly that this project "increases the levels of reading and writing amongst their pupils", "makes them more interested in their classes", "increases their repertoire of games and songs, as well as improving their ability to express themselves." These benefits will be received by 5,200 primary school children in the community of Eldorado in Brazil.
