“Ujesh” was just a baby when he tragically lost his mother to suicide. His desperately poor father scraped together a livelihood for a few years, but then disappeared - leaving Ujesh to fend for himself.
In the safe and stable environment of Olgapuri Children’s Village, Ujesh, now seven years old, is thriving. He goes to school every day, and comes home to a big "family" that supports and cares for him. But in order to continue enjoying his childhood, Ujesh needs to heal from the trauma of his past.
Staff at NYF’s Ankur Counseling Center provides specialized counseling and therapy sessions for Ujesh, and so many other children just like him. By addressing the deep trauma of loss and abandonment through age-appropriate approaches, Ankur counselors help Ujesh develop healthy coping skills.
Your generosity has helped to heal so many children just like Ujesh - and we hope you’ll continue your support for Ankur’s programs. Thank you.

Sona's first sand tray at Ankur Counseling Center
Ankur counselors use special approaches to help children heal from trauma that may be so deep they can’t even talk about it. Sand tray therapy has been particularly helpful for 11-year-old “Sona.”
After years of struggle, Sona’s desperately poor parents – both severely disabled – were forced to send Sona away for a better life. By creating miniature worlds using toy figures in a sand tray, Sona was able to address her painful feelings of abandonment.
Sona’s first sand tray at Ankur Counseling Center was unstructured and chaotic, and told no particular story. But as she continued with her therapy sessions, her trays became more and more organized. By her last tray, there was a clear storyline with many different themes and characters. It even featured a friend with a physical disability playing with the main character – indicative of Sona coming to terms with her trauma.
Your generosity helps Sona, and many others like her, heal from deep trauma. Thank you so much!

Your support helps children heal from trauma

Abandoned, orphaned, and destitute, most of the children in NYF’s programs are recovering from trauma. Staff at Ankur Counseling Center provides essential support for these children, including those at Olgapuri Children’s Village.
Over the past three months, Ankur counselors visited Olgapuri regularly to run a variety of sessions. While sessions for the younger children included age-appropriate games and activities like expressive art therapy and story-telling, older students attended workshops focused on building important life skills — like setting appropriate goals, communicating effectively, and making difficult decisions. For example, in the test-taking lesson, students learned how to handle exam anxiety, tackle time management, and practice relaxation techniques.
Some of these children have endured more trauma and suffering at an early age than most people experience in a lifetime. Psychological therapy helps them heal. Your continued support ensures that the children in our care are leading happy and healthy lives!
We’re so thankful for your support.
