The project aims to provide a monthly food pack to students attending public colleges in Blantyre, Malawi. These students come from vulnerable backgrounds & are unable to afford tuition, boarding fees & food, but are determined to secure a brighter future for their country through education. Sponsorships are available for tuition & boarding fees, but there isn't support for the provision of food - this is where Gift of the Givers bridges the gap for Malawi's youth, & future leaders.
Over 70% of Malawi's population live on less than $2.15 per day, making Malawi one of the poorest countries in Africa. Education is less off a priority since basic needs like food, water & shelter take priority. Existing college students struggle to complete their education due to a lack of funds to cover their meal expense as student loans are insufficient for this. Students proactively do odd jobs to pay for food, however, this results in an increased drop-out rate due to less time studying.
The provision of food reduces the burden of having to find food for the duration of their studies. We currently support 200 students at two different universities in Blantyre. The immediate impact of providing food support to college students is that their focus shifts from survival to performance at college.
Improved performance means that students will graduate over the prescribed time which improves their chances of employment as a graduate. Their families benefit from having someone to support them as many come from rural and impoverished homes and depend on a single breadwinner. The knock-on effect positively impacts the development of Malawi's workforce resulting in the country's economic growth.
