Building Health Capacity in Southern Haiti

By Ikpindi Djeri | Chief Program Officer

In 2025, Health Equity International/St. Boniface Hospital (HEI/SBH) reaffirmed its commitment to excellence by investing in the ongoing professional development of its clinical and support staff, even amid significant operational challenges. With your support, targeted continuing education ensured that teams remained equipped to manage life-threatening maternal and newborn conditions, including eclampsia, severe pre-eclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, and postpartum cardiomyopathy, with particular attention to the critical role nurses play in prevention and follow-up care. Staff capacity was also strengthened across pediatric and nutrition services, covering the management of severe acute malnutrition, neonatal nutrition, exclusive breastfeeding, sickle cell anemia, and parasitology diagnostics, reinforcing an integrated approach to care across all stages of life.

Beyond clinical care, HEI/SBH extended its training focus to the foundational systems that keep patients safe and staff supported. Education sessions on infection prevention, nosocomial infection control, and hospital waste management strengthened the safety environment across the facility, while training on workplace conflict management helped protect staff well-being in an increasingly demanding context. This holistic approach to capacity building reflects HEI/SBH's understanding that quality care depends on more than medical supplies alone. Thanks to the dedication of our teams and the sustained investment of donors like you, St. Boniface Hospital continues to uphold its standard of care for the communities that depend on it most.
