In the Eastern Cape, many mothers, especially from rural areas, arrive at our government maternity hospital without basic items for their newborns. This project provides care packs with essentials to support mothers during the critical first weeks of their baby's life. By working with hospital staff, we reach the most vulnerable families, offering dignity, comfort, and the care every baby needs to thrive.
In the Eastern Cape, South Africa, many mothers arrive at our government maternity hospital without basic items needed for their newborns. This is more common for those from rural areas. The hospital, though compassionate, is under-resourced and not able to provide baby supplies. This level of need reflects a deeper issue of poverty. After reading about a mother who left with her baby wrapped in newspaper, we had to act. Every mother & baby deserves dignity and essentials at this critical time.
This project will provide newborn care packs to mothers who arrive at the hospital without the essentials they need. Each pack will include items like a baby blanket, clothes, diapers, and basic toiletries, helping mothers care for their babies with dignity in the first few weeks of life. By partnering with hospital staff, we can ensure these packs reach the families who need them most. This immediate practical support eases the burden on mothers, offering compassion and relief at this time.
While the newborn care packs meet an immediate need, their impact extends beyond the hospital stay. By providing essential items during a vulnerable time, we help reduce stress and promote healthier, more confident starts for both mother and baby. This small act of support can improve early bonding, infant care, and mental well-being. The project also raises awareness of the needs faced by under-resourced families, encouraging a more compassionate community response to maternal and newborn care.
