NBJK with its vision to provide quality Eye care services to the rural poor marginalised population in Jharkhand is working consistently to reach the people in need. Every week Village Screening camps are organised at different locations where villagers can visit the camp and get themselves diagnosed free of cost. The camp has been running since long and is extremely effective to reach the people in need who cannot afford to visit the hospital on their own.
The beneficiaries who are diagnosed of cataract and transferred to the base hospital in the Hospital van and are admitted in the hospital for the further diagnosis and operation. After the pre-diagnosis; the patients are operated for cataract by the Opthalmologist and are also provided with medicines and glasses. They are dropped back into the villages in the van with necessary precautions and guidance for regular check-up.
There are many people visiting the camp who were having cataract since last 2-3 years but were unable to afford treatment and were helpless. Sahasram was one of them. He is 64; and belongs to Banwara village of Jharkhand state. He has two daughters and 1 son. All of them are maried. His son is a daily wage labourer and takes care of the family. Due to cataract, Sahasram was entirely dependent on others for his movement and daily activities. Due to poverty they were unable to afford the treatment cost. They came to know about the Village Screening camp and attended it. He was diagnosed of cataract and was operated successfully. Now, he can see properly and is helping is son to support the family by doing some farm work.
I am also taking the opportunity to share the live coverage of NBJK's work on cataract surgery being broadcasted in "TIMES NOW" news channel. Please follow the link to see the video:
