Care2Travel runs Summer Camps in Transylvania which aims to provide disadvantaged children with week-long camps to learn English via games, sport and arts & crafts. We give them the chance to play and interact with other children and with local and international volunteers. Our teams create weekly schedules of activities that keep the children entertained and active, as well as language classes run by native English speakers to help the children practice English.
Care2Travel works in the Harghita county of Transylvania which is home to many poor and disadvantaged families. Many have been affected by economic migration, where parents often migrate in search of work and leave children with grandparents or other caregivers. Unfortunately, some of these families have also been broken by alcohol abuse and domestic violence and the children are left without positive role models and safe spaces to play.
By providing summer camps in the villages where the children live, we can reach children who would otherwise have limited opportunities during their summer breaks. These camps provide a safe outlet for children to play, make friends and learn English from native English speakers. Our local and international volunteers provide positive role models for the children who attend our camps. Each day the children have the opportunity to grow and learn.
We aim to reach over 500 children at 12 summer camps during 2019. By offering these camps yearly, many of the children in our local community have displayed significant behavioural changes, going from disruptive to engaged students, and thus becoming more motivated to remain in school. They've become empowered to move out of a cycle of poverty and dysfunction and become independent, contributing members of society and with many of our students coming back to become volunteers at our camps.
