In Nigeria and generally across the globe, adolescents and young people are faced with several challenges that affect their health and wellbeing. Adolescents and young people are dealing with constantly changing environments and issues ranging from addressing conflicts, processing emotions, understanding oneself and interacting with others. This transition stage also predisposes young people to engaging in risky behaviors thereby increasing their vulnerability to sexual and gender-based violence, unplanned pregnancy, HIV and other STIs and even death.
Oftentimes, we have seen that adolescents and young people are denied access to complete and accurate information on the issues that affect them especially on their changing bodies, sexual and reproductive health and dealing with relationships. Culture and religion have played a part in watering down the severity of these issues and it is difficult for parents and guardians to even have these conversations openly and effectively with their wards.
To address this challenge, and towards ensuring that young people are equipped with information and skills to make informed decisions on their health and reach full potential, through the My Question and Answer (My Q and A) service, Education as a Vaccine (EVA) has provided accurate, non-judgmental and timely information to adolescents and young people on our various platforms; hotline, sms, WhatsApp and Facebook.
Through your support, we have been able to keep the My Q and A platforms active by providing information and counselling services to young people. This service has empowered adolescents and young people to make informed decisions and take charge of their lives. We have also provided counselling and referral services to adolescents and young people experiencing sexual and gender- based violence.
This quarter a total of 874 questions were responded to. These questions ranged from issues related to puberty and body changes, signs, symptoms and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, sexual reproductive health issues, issues related to relationships and sexual relationships, etc.
We continue to count on your donations to enable more adolescents and young people in Nigeria get the support they need to make healthier choices.
