Category 5 Hurricane Dorian
Hurricane Dorian made landfall on the northern islands of The Bahamas on September 1, bringing with it widespread devastation. The category 5 storm is now considered to be the worst hurricane ever to hit The Bahamas and one of the strongest ever in the Atlantic.
WCK’s Response
World Central Kitchen (WCK) was ready before Dorian hit. We arrived two days before the hurricane struck and prepared by setting up a kitchen in Nassau, 80 miles south of the storm’s eye. Our Relief Team secured transport to the northern islands and outer cays so that we were able to begin bringing hot meals and sandwiches immediately via helicopter. In Grand Bahama Island in particular, sending a 220-foot boat with kitchen supplies and ingredients from Florida allowed us to have a fully operational kitchen preparing 20,000+ meals within days.
Today, our kitchens in Abaco and Freeport (in Grand Bahama) remain highly operational and continue to serve 20,000 meals each day. Our kitchen in Nassau prepares 2,000 meals a day for the remaining shelters on the island. In the three months since the hurricane, WCK has served over 2 million meals and we’re still cooking.
What’s Next
The Bahamas face an arduous road to recovery. Abaco still only has one operational grocery store, and it is operating at less than capacity. WCK is dedicated to supporting the Bahamas as long as we are needed. Until then, we will continue to do our small part in ensuring that everyone has a hot plate of food, served with a comforting smile and words of hope. From WCK, thank you for your donation to our relief effort; your support makes our work possible.
