End of the School Year Report

Good afternoon project supporters,

I am amazed that another school year has passed at the Ashiana School for Street Children and they are completing their year-end exams going into winter recess until the end of March 2016. How does this effect the AMOR Clinic you ask? Fortunately for the community, the clinic remains open throughout the winter and the only thing that changes is that children that may need urgent care services are not already right there on campus.

Achiana students receive 100% free services regardless of whether the school is open or not. All of the family members of the student receive all of their services at a 50% discount. So whether they are treated with an exam and diagnosis, need medications, or lab work done....they pay only 50% of the charges. As an example, an exam with a physician and diagnosis has a standard charge of 100 afs, or $0.64. Family members of the students pay just $0.32, and if this is too much additional discounts or free services are given.

The clinic is making steady progress on the path to increasing the numbr of patients receiving medical services or health education. As Afghans settle in for a wet, cold, snowy winter we look forward to being a beacon of hope for the communities we serve.

Increasing the clinic's reach in the community

Greeting to all the amazing supporters of the AAHO clinic at the Aschiana School for Street Children!

The school year began the middle of March, and will remain in session through October. The clinic provides check ups, urgent care and vaccines for the students on campus and their siblings. The number of pediatric patients receiving medical services increases each month and we are delighted by the confidence the community is showing in the physicians and nurses.

The number of pediatric patients being treated for medical purposes has risen to an average of just under 300 per month. Additionally, another 40 -50 children are routinely receiving vaccines each month. The provision of these essential services right on the school campus is extreamly valuable in the long term health of these at risk children.

On going outreach into the community through education classes, and the hiring of additional staff, has had a positive impact in the lives of those living in the apartments and inter-displacement camps surrounding the clinic. The clinic is averaging over 600 patients a month, and in May a total of 252 new patients were treated. Additionally 40 ultrasounds were performed and over 1500 persciptions were filled at the clinic.

The security situation in Kabul remains tenuous and continues to threaten the daily lives of the children and their families living in this area. The AAHO staff also feels the additional burden of not knowing where the next unreast will demonstrate itself. Still, the presence of the clinic with it's reliable services and well stocked pharmacy, is a beacon of hope to the community.
