Preventing Communicable Diseases

By Pam Amundsen | Project Leader

Anyone who has raised or watched children knows the illness can be cyclical. Our little one gets sick, and before we know it her sibling is sick, then we get sick. These types of diseases, often called communicable diseases because they travel from person to person by direct contact with an affected individual or the individual's discharges or by indirect means, are often preventable.

Because illness is common among young children, those in the child care setting are likely to be two to three times more at risk of getting sick. In our homes across Kenya, we work so hard to create healthy environments that keep our littles healthy so that they can thrive in our care. This project is specifically raising money to help make that happen, through the purchase of hygienic mats, crib covers, mattress protectors, additional furniture for our baby unit, and some needed updates to our medical facility. All of these purchases are focused on preventative care because we know how important it is.

Studies shows that illnesses contracted as an infant or child can impact your health long-term. We've witnessed the evidence of that first hand, when babies rescued after being abandoned in extreme weather conditions have a hard time fully recovering. Though we have incredible staff nurses and doctors, and many friendly doctors who volunteer their services to help keep our medical costs low, the most cost effective way to treat any illness is before it begins. Adding preventative care measures help decrease our overall budget and keep our babies healthy for life.

With your help, we can prevent illness before it takes hold and prepare for any future need by updating our existing medical facility. Join us in keeping our babies happy, healthy, and thriving, by contributing to this project, becoming a fundraiser for this project, or inviting your friends and family members to give a small gift on behalf of these incredible children!
