Poverty continues to deprive children from the most basic necessities to live a better life. According to UNICEF , 1 child in 11 dies before the age of 5 in Uganda. Especially, children born in rural, impoverished areas face significant risk. Inaccessibility of health supplies and services remains a pressing issue due to variety of factors such as families low income to a shortage of health workers. Many of health challenges might be prevented through health education and awareness programs.
Children in rural areas of Uganda lack access to basic health supplies. In the most families there is a lack of awareness and education regarding health of children. Wilmat Development Foundation works in the 3 regions of Uganda (Eastern, Western and Central respectively) communities. This project is targeting 50 vulnerable children and 100 families in the districts of Mayuge and Budaka Eastern Uganda.
The Project will address both immediate needs for basic health supplies for at risk children as well as focus on providing training on health and creating awareness on children's wellness and health facts. It will also provide health supplies such as diapers, sanitary wipes, menstrual pads and wheelchairs. Mothers and families will be trained in child care. Wilmat Development Foundation visits, outreaches and hands on approach will reach immediate beneficiaries of the project.
To enhance knowledge sharing, making of healthy re-usable products that are cost effective, and economic empowerment for families in the target communities to improve the children's health care and wellness practices. - To impact on at least 150 direct community members and 100 indirect beneficiaries through the sustainable livelihood trainings.
