Since the previous update, the academic year has officially concluded. However, for us at Bina Berdaya Bangsa, the conclusion of a the learning sessions does not mark the end of the journey. In fact, this is precisely when we wish to observe the most crucial aspects:
Did the students’ gain in knowledge yield changes in their daily life?
Did the teachers feel more confident and equipped in facilitating reproductive health education?
To answer these questions, we looked at the data collected over the course of the year and then visited each school. Together with the teachers, we evaluated the “Remaja 101” (Adolescence 101) program - findings from the data, feedback on the program, and observations of the impact.
Impact on the Students
Through reflective assignments, students learned to recognize changes in their bodies as a natural part of the development process. The completed worksheets revealed that more than half of all students have already started experiencing signs of early puberty. One of the students shared that he had once felt embarrassed because the changes in his body differed from those of his peers. But when he learned through the program that every child grows at their own pace and in their own way, he became more confident to ask his parents or teachers whenever he had a question about puberty.
The lesson on recognizing and protecting their private body areas resonated the most with the students - helping them to understand personal boundaries, respect their own bodies and those of others, and be better prepared to protect themselves against various forms of violence. Following the program, the number of students demonstrating a good understanding of this subject jumped from 59.5% to 89.7%.
Impact on the School and Home Environment
The impact on the school environment is evident in the teacher participation rates: 91% of teachers for grades 4–6 participated in delivering the material. 60% of the material was presented by the teachers themselves. The training that teachers received from Bina Berdaya Bangsa helped boost their confidence in guiding discussions on reproductive health. At home, students completed homework that required collaboration with their parents. As a result, many parents have begun discussions about puberty with their children - topics previously considered awkward or taboo.

These changes may seem simple. However, we believe that a safe environment for children is built upon small, consistent steps: a child who dares to ask questions, a parent willing to listen, and a teacher ready to provide support.
