Jesuit Social Service plans to organize a community of more than 50 families in a tiny village of Tetesari, Ulmera, Liquica, Timor Leste. The plan is to construct a water infrastructure using deep well electric pump. The water pump complete with water tank and tributary pipes will provide not just drinking water but also the much needed irrigation for their small backyard farming. The children will enjoy the most benefit as they don't need to push their flimsy carts to fetch water.
Tetesari village has been struggling with meager water supply not even enough for household needs. The extended period of dry spell in Timor Leste which lasts for at least 10 months makes it even more difficult to cultivate their farm and support their own livelihood. As a result, many of them are suffering from severe dehydration and the poor children have to fetch water with push carts for quite long distance.
Jesuit Social Service would like to alleviate these problems by organizing the community in Tetesari in order to facilitate the construction of the water pump and the main water tank as well as the guarantee of proper maintenance of the whole system with their concerted effort as a community. Access to clean underground water will address certain health problems as well as their need to irrigate their land for agriculture. Thereby fostering the community's ability to be more self-sustaining.
Providing access to clean water to 55 families hopes to address their problems on health and livelihood. The project will guarantee a sustained supply of water even during the dry season. Long-term vision is to foster a self-sustaining community where their need for water is secured and their livelihood well sustained and the people become empowered to be independent from aids. This project will surely become a focal point for a stronger sense of community and thus encourage more cooperation.
