Children face trauma, stigma related to AIDS from their community. This project aims to empower children living with HIV with a dignified and positive life.
Salem and Namakkal districts in India have more than 1000 children and young people living with HIV and AIDS. Majority of the Children living with HIV we reach, have lost either parents to AIDS. They lack nutrition, they have to be on medication for lifetime (ART drugs), HIV+ adolescents go through psychological stress, depression, neglected resulting in low self esteem, some school drop outs, they are non-adherent to treatment and often struggle with several questions and suicidal thoughts.
The project will provide care, nutrition, psychological counselling, organise support group meetings. Project will also hold trainings on HIV treatment and adherence and develop peer supporters, organise life skills trainings and residential camps to build hope and help HIV+ children and young people set goals for life and pursue their dreams. Monthly support group meetings among HIV+ children will give them confidence to make good friendships and improve their mental health challenges.
Children part of the project will be able to lead a healthy life by adhering to Ante-Reteroviral Treatment and medications and taking good nutrition. They will also be empowered to make good friendships, have improved mental health, able to set goals and pursue their dreams. Some HIV+ young people will emerge as Peer Educators and Leaders to be an inspiration and support to younger HIV+ children.
