The Adopt-A-Healthcare-Facility Program (ADHFP) aims to upgrade one Primary Health Centre to world class level in Ningi Local Government Area (LGA) of Bauchi State, Nigeria. The current state of Ningi Primary Health Centre requires urgent attention. Access to qualitative, affordable healthcare remains a challenge in Nigeria for a large majority of the population who are rural dwelling, low-income earners whose first point of contact with the health care system is the Primary Health Centre.
With only about 20% of Nigeria's 30,000 primary health centers working, the challenges militating against primary healthcare includes low budgetary allocation to health; poor state of infrastructure; high out-of-pocket expenditure which places qualitative care beyond reach; low trust in public health systems leading to low uptake of services; migration of health workers arising from poor remuneration and the desire of existing workers; and low coverage of health insurance.
The ADHFP will provide equitable access to quality and affordable primary healthcare to rural dwellers, lower maternal and child mortality, and reduce morbidity rates in rural communities. The project will upgrade health facilities and infrastructure to meet the minimum standards of care, strengthen governance and accountability mechanisms to ensure Primary Health Center reform, and secure the Government's commitment to expanding coverage of citizens under social health insurance scheme.
ADHFP will improve health indices and provide equitable access to quality healthcare services, gender empowerment from improved female health services, job creation across a functional, robust, and reliable health value chain, civic engagement and government accountability, health policy reforms and compliance with clinical standards, and increased uptake of Micro Health Insurance. Long term, ADHFP aims to upgrade one primary health center in each of Nigeria's 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
