Dear Friends and Supporters

It is time for us to move on to our next school challenge. We have completed our project agreement with the government. This includes improvements to the school hostel at Muchu to cater for an expanding student population, the construction of more classrooms and the renovation and expansion of a satelite school at Challa village. The population at Muchu and surrounding villages are now well catered for education facilities under the control and guidance of the government.

The Nepal Trust will never be far away and will respond to any issues, concerns or worries that occur.

This will be our final report from Muchu but you may well hear more in the future. We are currently in discussion with the government and donors to establish a new project to expand and improve a number of existing schools throughout Humla. Fifteen schools have been identified. A similar project is at an early proposal stage to launch something similar in our other main target area of Sindupalchowk. We will keep you informed as things develop and I hope to launch a new project on our GlobalGiving platform as soon as all details are tidied up.

We are very grateful to you for your help and support in funding and completing this vital project. Education is so important in these remote and deficient areas and it is so vital if children are to have any future.

Please stay in touch and tell your friends about our vital work. We need to keep you with us!

Dear Friends and Supporters

We are nearly there! Work on the construction of two new classrooms at the hostel school have started. In addition we have started work on the renovation and repair of a school at Challa village. This school caters for 44 students many of whom will move on to Muchu to finish their education.

When these works are completed we will have concluded our Agreement with the government and will move on to other schools in the district that badly need our help and support.

We will not forget Muchu and will always be there to provide our support and help when needed. This is our normal procedure and we have never totally abandoned a single project in Humla. This approach has helped us build a trusting relationship with the local villagers who know we will always be there to support them. The people of the Hidden Himalayas are never forgotten by us.

However, under our government agreement we must also move on and help other communities that require support to rebuild their schools and a better future for their children. We do thank you for your support and hope you will continue to help us tackle the myriad of problems and issues that affect this beautiful but impoverished country. A decent education for the children in these remote areas is a lifeline to a better future and a sustainable one in their own communities.

Thank you for your help and Namaste.

Dear Friends and Supporters

The construction works at Muchu village are still ongoing, despite the heavy rainfalls. As reported previously the ongoing works included the construction of the new the canteen/kitchen and storage facilities to meet the increased demand from children from outlying villages. We are happy to inform you that these components have been fully completed.

In discussion with the local school committee the site for new classrooms has been identified and currently wood and local materials are being collected to start the building works. Other works that hopefully soon can start include the full repair and maintenance of the school hall, which is great need to be upgraded.

This will enable the school management committee to provide better education facilities and services to the many children that are in need of proper education. With our help they will surely succeed.

Your support is as always much needed and gratefully received. We like to thank you for all support you have provided us with to date and we hope you will continue with us. Please tell your friends and encourage them to.

Dear Friends and Supporters

Muchu village is about as far as you can go in north west Nepal before you hit the border with Tibet/China.It lies in the beautiful Karnali river valley at an elevation of over 3000m. It is the 'centre' for a number of smaller villages scattered around within a few hours trekking. There is splendid monastery there that has been helped to renovate by the Nepal Trust.

It sits on the main trail to Mount Kailash, an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Hindus, and can be very busy during the tourist season. Simikot, the headquarters for Humla, is a 2-3 day walk south but Tibet, to the north is less than one day a way. Economic activity has always preferred the northern route and this will remain so as a road is slowly being developed from the border to the south and eventually to Simikot. It has always been the plan to set up a trading station at the border to generate income to support the school and its hostel for outlying pupils. We are sure that this will happen because the people of Muchu are traders, that is what they do and it is part of their heritage. With our help they will surely succeed.

Winter has now passed and the snow at school level has gone. Work is progressing well to build the canteen/kitchen and storage facilities to meet the increased demand from children from outlying villages.Work on new additional classrooms will start later in the year.

A good education increases life chances and is an incredible lifeline for children from such remote and difficult areas. Your support is much needed and gratefully received. Thank you for all you have done to support this cause and we hope you will continue with us. Please tell your friends and encourage them to.

Dear friends and supporters

Humla is currently under heavy snow and it is very difficult to move around. There are no roads and walking is your only option. Muchu is a 3-4 day walk from Simikot along the main trail to Hilsa, the crossing point into Tibet. At this time of the year there is little movement.

However, what feedback we are receiving suggests all is well at the school and academic life continues as normal. Children, even the youngest, have the hostel as their home during the week where they receive warm food, a bed and some homely comforts. It is the normal routine for those children who live faraway and cannot make the journey on a daily basis and would not, therefore, receive any education.

This project is part of a wider two strand project. The first strand, which is now fully funded, involves the development and expansion of the school and its facilities. This work is now progressing. The second strand, which is covered by this project, involves the development and the running costs of the school hostel. Without the hostel many children simply would not be able to attend school and receive any education limiting their life opportunities in the future.

The project plans to cover running costs for three years by which time it is hoped that the hostel will be self sustaining. This will be achieved by setting up a wholesale and distribution centre in Hilsa. Hilsa is rapidly developing in to an economic hub on the Tibet/China border and is also the main access to holy Mount Kailash in Tibet. Work has started on this economic opportunity and hopes are high that it will succeed.

Many thanks for your interest and support and we hope you will continue with us until we have improved the life chances of these children of north Humla. Please spread the news and the importance of helping these remote children achieve some of their ambitions. We look forward to sharing progress with you over the coming months.
