Nourishing Futures: The Carapita Food Project

By Alejandro Sauce | Project Leader

1. Project Overview

Protein and Hope is dedicated to combating the severe nutritional crisis in the community of Carapita, Caracas. In an environment where families often survive on just two carbohydrate-based meals a day, our mission is to provide 100 vulnerable families with consistent access to high-quality proteins and essential micronutrients through specialized Nutritional Food Baskets (NFB).

2. Key Activities & Recent Milestones

  • Continuous Nutritional Support: Through our "You Feed, You Educate" (Tú Alimentas, Tú Educas) program, we provide daily meals to 220 beneficiaries, including children, adolescents, and vulnerable seniors, hosted at our local parish center. In 90% of cases, the daily lunch provided by our program represents the only full meal consumed by these vulnerable children and elderly community members.
  • Nutritional Screenings (In Progress): Three months ago, we initiated a comprehensive nutritional assessment (Tamizaje). We are currently evaluating the children to identify specific cases of malnutrition or obesity, allowing us to tailor our support to those in most urgent need.
  • Team Recognition: In December, we distributed specialized food baskets to our dedicated local staff. These individuals work daily in the kitchen and community to ensure the program's success.
  • Holiday Community Outreach: During the month of December, we hosted special community events, providing festive meals to celebrate the holidays and strengthen community bonds during these difficult times.

3. Current Challenges & Strategy

The economic landscape in Venezuela remains challenging, with high inflation making protein sources (meat, eggs, legumes) increasingly difficult to procure.

  • Financial Sustainability: Our primary challenge is securing the steady flow of funds required to sustain this high-impact, high-cost project for the full 12-month cycle.
  • Goal: We are actively seeking new partners and donors to ensure we can continue providing the Nutritional Food Baskets designed by our nutritionists.
