Nourishing Futures in Carapita

By Luisa Paez | Project Leader

1. Project Overview

Protein and Hope remains fully dedicated to combating the severe nutritional crisis in the community of Carapita, Caracas. In an environment where vulnerable families face extreme economic hardships, our mission is to ensure consistent access to high-quality proteins, essential micronutrients, and specialized care to protect and restore the health of the community's most vulnerable members.

2. Key Activities & Recent Milestones

  • Continuous Nutritional Support: Through our local parish center, the community kitchen continues to operate with exceptional discipline, providing a complete, balanced daily meal to each participant. The program currently serves 245 beneficiaries, which includes 230 children and 15 vulnerable seniors. For the vast majority of these individuals, this daily lunch remains their only comprehensive source of nutrition for the day.
  • Targeted Nutritional Interventions: Following the comprehensive nutritional screening (Tamizaje) conducted in January, our nutritionist has successfully implemented specific dietary modifications tailored to the individual evaluation results of students suffering from malnutrition or obesity.
  • Medical Recovery Framework: Children currently undergoing treatment to restore their nutritional health are receiving specialized, supervised care from a dedicated team consisting of a pediatric geneticist and a nutritionist.
  • Strategic Resource Management: Restoring a child suffering from malnutrition is a structured process that takes approximately 8 months. We are currently in Month 3 of this recovery cycle. To ensure financial efficiency, we have successfully partnered with a peer organization dedicated to child nutrition, which generously provides the necessary specialized nutritional supplements completely free of charge.

3. Current Challenges & Strategy

  • Economic Context: The economic landscape in Venezuela continues to present significant challenges, with high inflation heavily impacting the cost and procurement of essential protein sources like meat, eggs, and legumes.
  • Sustaining specialized care: While we have mitigated immediate costs for nutritional supplements through strategic alliances, securing a steady flow of operational funds remains our primary challenge. We need sustained funding to ensure the community kitchen can maintain its rigorous daily operations and continue executing the specialized menus designed by our nutritional team for the full project cycle.
  • Partnership Goals: We are actively seeking new partners and long-term donors to safeguard the continuity of this high-impact project and expand our capacity to protect the children and elderly of Carapita.
