During October 2023, we received information about a family and the protagonists of this story through collaborators. The father approached our associates to report the disappearance of his daughter. Believing that ASTRA could help him, the collaborators forwarded the information to us.
The initial contact with the father was highly emotional. He was desperate and didn't know how to help or protect his child. He learned that his fifteen-year-old daughter was in the house of a boy she had met through social media. She was in another city. The father had previously informed the relevant Social Welfare Centers and the Police. However, he faced discrimination and prejudices from the employees of these institutions towards the Roma population. The Police told him they didn't understand why he was upset since it was customary for Roma to marry early and leave home. This further distressed the father, intensifying his sense of helplessness. He was not in good health, being treated for diabetes. Stress had exacerbated his condition, causing his blood sugar levels to spike several times. Parents were making an effort to provide better living conditions for the girl. The family where the girl was living at the moment was impoverished. Father also found out that it was a very problematic family. As the father explained, the fifteen-year-old girl was running away from home for the third time. Her behavior has changed since she started running away from home, and their communication is no longer the same. He was afraid of potential abuse.
After the first contact with the father, ASTRA contacted both Social Welfare Centers and the Police in the relevant cities. The girl was promptly found and returned home. The father told us that she had fallen in love with the boy, wanted to be with him, and thought it was acceptable to stay at his place. Instead of communicating with his daughter, her parents yelled at her and grounded her, but they were worried and didn't know how to express themselves.
Towards the end of November, the story repeated itself with the girl. Once again, the father sought our help after facing a negative experience with institutions. We urgently submitted a report urging the institutions to act. After a few days, the girl returned home.
After her second return, ASTRA supported the parents in communicating honestly and openly with their daughter. Besides, direct contact was established with the girl. She was doing well. The father said she had promised and understood the need to be with her family.
It will take time, but we will strive to build a trusting relationship with the girl. Our goal is to support and empower her and her parents to continue her education and ensure that her cognitive, emotional, and social development moves in the right direction.
