ASTRA - Anti Trafficking Action, is an independent grass-root organization, established in 2000, with the goal to contribute to the eradication of human trafficking. So far ASTRA has assisted over 572 victims of human trafficking during their recovery; among whom 34% were children. In response to an increasing number of missing children, in order to prevent and protect children from being exposed to violence, and the weaknesses of the search mech the 116000 European hotline for missing children.
Since May 2012, ASTRA has been operating European Hotline for Missing Children 116 000 for the territory of Serbia. In the first ten years of work, the Hotline received the total of 4,413 calls, based on which 143 cases of missing children were mapped (83 girls and 60 boys). 8998% of these reports were solved successfully. According to Europol at least 18.000 child refugees have gone missing in Europe. It is feared that many have become victims of some kind of exploitation.
Search for missing children will be speed up through contacting associates, publishing information on social media. ASTRA provides assistance to field workers when missing child is reported, emotional and psychological support to families, contact point between carers who reported the case and agencies involved, provision of expertise and advice on procedure related to a missing child. This project will enable children and families to receive legal, psychological and medical assistance.
Ensuring the prompt reaction and quick location of the missing children, possible exploitation and abuse will be prevented and the children rights will be protected. This project will help build a framework of prevention strategies and services before abuse and neglect occur and be prepared to offer remediation and treatment to children when necessary.
