Since 24 February 2022, we have helped over 13,500 refugees fleeing Ukraine, doing what we are good at: providing information, free legal assistance and representation and advocating for the rights and benefits they are entitled to. We regularly monitor shelters and reception facilities where Ukrainian refugees are accommodated throughout Hungary to make sure that the most vulnerable are not excluded from our services.
Three years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Hungarian government continues to limit the rights of refugees fleeing Ukraine. Since August 2024, only refugees coming from Ukrainie's directly war-impacted regions may access subsidized accommodation in Hungary. This means around 3-4,000 refugees are at risk of destitution and homelessness and lack proper access to social services, such as schooling.
The project supports refugees fleeing to Hungary from the war in Ukraine. It will help them access their rights and social support benefits. We provide high-quality, free-of-charge legal assistance and representation. Our support makes a real difference for people. Last August, we succeeded in saving hundreds of refugees from homelessness by challenging unlawful practices in court and publicly advocating for our clients' rights.
The HHC is the main organisation providing free legal assistance to refugees in Hungary. By preventing homelessness and ensuring access to education and social services, we help refugees rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient. Stability allows them to find jobs, send their children to school, and contribute to their communities. At the same time, we raise awareness about their struggles and build public support for refugee rights. This fosters a more inclusive and compassionate society.
