Thank you for supporting David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) Protecting Chimpanzees.

In 2016, the western chimpanzee was listed as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List. Guinea remains a key chimpanzee stronghold, but many challenges still exist which threaten their survival. The three key threats to chimpanzees are poaching (for bushmeat, live trade, traditional medicine, and crop protection), habitat loss and fragmentation, and disease.

For the 2022-2023 financial year DSWF funding to our ground-based conservation partner in Guinea seeks to reduce the negative impact that humans and expansion of settlements exerts on the populations of wild chimpanzees in Guinea and their habitats, specifically around the High Niger National Park (HNNP), through education and community development.

This will be achieved through the following objectives:

  1. Implementing an education programme that will reach over three hundred school children as well as local villagers, authorities, and law enforcement forces.
  2. Increasing understanding and raising awareness within local communities about the threats to biodiversity and conservation, especially for chimpanzees.
  3. Supporting the communities within the HNNP to find sustainable alternative livelihoods, that can improve their quality of life and at the same time reduce their impact on chimpanzees and their habitats.

Through achieving these objectives our ground-based conservation partners expect to see the following impact:

  • Increased knowledge amongst local communities about the threats facing chimps to foster greater sympathy and to encourage the co-existence of humans and wildlife.
  • Increased access to livelihoods and skills that don’t rely on the encroachment of nature.
  • Reduced chimp poaching and wildlife crime in the national park.

DSWF relies entirely on donations and support from generous individuals like you to continue to fight wildlife crime, protect species and engage individuals and communities to ensure a brighter future for wildlife. So, thank you for helping to give Chimpanzees a chance of survival.
