Tanzania has to face considerable political and economic development challenges in recent years such as economic distribution, population growth, climate-induced changes and an increase of alcohol consumption, especially among young people. Tanzania is with a Human Development Index rank among the lowest 20% one of the poorest 15 nations in the world.
Tanzania's economy remains vulnerable to the environment. The country has to face issues partly due to poor rainfall that has created problems for the overall food production. Tanzania is also experiencing high population growth. Young people under the age of 25 are the majority of the population. Alcohol- and drug consumption among young people has risen, in addition to poverty and high youth unemployment. Substance abuse is a huge burden for sustainable development, health and education.
To protect young people from sliding into addiction due to the many problems in the country, IBC carries out a prevention programme in cooperation with its local partner. The programme primarily addresses students at secondary schools in Tanzania as well as street children and youth. Project activities aim for educating young people with the knowledge and life skills necessary to lead a healthy life without addiction, complemented by activities aimed at creating better living conditions.
The long-term impact of preventing substance abuse among youth mitigates the negative economic, health and social consequences on society. Together with local partners, the IBC prevention programme develops concepts for better protection of young people with a long-term perspective. The programme aims to enable a life free from addiction as well as alcohol- and drug-related harm, especially among young people.
