The Iriomote Cat Conservation Fund is making its 4th report for this GlobalGiving project.
We have continued with our ongoing efforts to protect the Iriomote cat and its habitat. We raised our concerns over a proposal by the Ecotourism Comittee of Taketomi Town, to open nine coastal areas for camping and campfire tours, which could harm the environment and contradict existing conservation policies. We have requested that they conduct talks in open forums so the community can contribute comments about the changes in the policies.
A report was submitted to the IUCN, highlighting the lack of effective measures to regulate tourism and prevent roadkill, despite inaction by the managing party (the Japanese Government).
While no Iriomote cat traffic accidents occurred in 2024, there are frequent road appearances which remain an issue, prompting continued awareness campaigns and continuation of night patrols.
Educational programs and special events, such as Iriomote Cat Day, were also conducted to engage local communities in conservation efforts working with the youth to conduct various programs.
