As we enter the final stretch of this year's sea turtle nesting season, we’re thrilled to share some gold medal moments from the field. Your unwavering support has enabled us to make tremendous strides in protecting these incredible creatures. With just two months remaining, we’d like to give you an inside look at what we’ve accomplished and what lies ahead.
Thanks to your generosity, we’ve successfully protected 2,636 hawksbill sea turtle nests and 2,427 green sea turtle nests this season—representing 86% and 97% of all recorded nests for these species, respectively. In addition, we recorded three leatherback nests in Holbox; unfortunately, one was predated by raccoons, and the other two were inundated by Hurricane Cristóbal.
Despite these challenges, our efforts have already ensured that 44,178 hawksbill hatchlings and 2,650 green turtle hatchlings have safely made it to the ocean—and these numbers are still growing. While most female hawksbills have completed their nesting for the season, many of their nests are still incubating. On the other hand, green sea turtle nesting only began in June, so there’s still plenty of activity, with many nests yet to hatch.
Our dedicated teams and their volunteers in El Cuyo and Holbox continue to work tirelessly every day, not only protecting sea turtle nests but also participating in environmental education campaigns with local youth. Their involvement is crucial for conserving these critical nesting habitats, and raising awareness among them remains one of our key goals.
This season hasn’t been without its challenges. Our aging ATVs have faced numerous mechanical issues due to their constant use, and nest predation by feral dogs has increased in Celestún and El Cuyo. However, our teams have risen to the occasion, and the number of hatchlings we’ve seen so far is a testament to their hard work and dedication.
As we approach the final weeks of this nesting season, your continued support will be more crucial than ever. Together, we can ensure that every last hatchling makes it safely to the sea.
