Years of armed conflict, mass displacement, and poverty have left thousands of families in Ituri highly vulnerable to Ebola outbreaks. Women caring for sick relatives and children living in overcrowded displacement camps face the greatest risk. Fear, misinformation, attacks on health facilities, and limited access to clean water and healthcare allow disease to spread quickly, threatening lives and weakening already fragile communities.
Amina remembers hiding her children whenever strangers arrived. "I didn't know who to trust," she says. This project trains local health volunteers, women leaders, and Ebola survivors to deliver trusted health education in local languages, distribute hygiene supplies, improve infection prevention, strengthen community surveillance, and provide psychosocial support. Families gain the knowledge and confidence needed to stop Ebola before it spreads.
This project will help create healthier, more resilient communities across Ituri. Women trained as community health champions will continue educating families long after the project ends. Stronger local health systems, greater public trust, better outbreak preparedness, and survivor leadership will reduce future Ebola risks while protecting children, improving community resilience, and strengthening public health for generations.
