Building Resilience Before the Flood: Food Security and Safe Water for Wichi Families

By Wanda Wurman | CADENA Argentina Director

Over the past four months, CADENA Argentina has implemented critical anticipatory and humanitarian actions in the Wichí Indigenous communities of San Felipe and La Esperanza, in Rivadavia Banda Sur, Salta Province. As outlined in our anticipatory alert, these communities face predictable seasonal flooding of the Bermejo River, which isolates them for months and severely restricts access to safe water, food, and healthcare

In San Felipe, we delivered 50 food modules, each designed to cover one month of nutrition for a family, directly strengthening household food security before the rainy season. In addition, 20 rainwater harvesting systems were installed, including elevated tanks, structural bases, and collection systems. These systems allow families to safely store rainwater and significantly reduce reliance on contaminated surface or saline well water during floods.

In La Esperanza, 50 food modules were also distributed, ensuring one month of food supply per family. To address chronic water vulnerability, a raised water tank connected to a community well was installed, powered by a functional solar pump. From this elevated system, a newly built water distribution network now delivers clean water directly to 40 households through pipes and individual taps. This infrastructure represents a structural shift: families now have consistent access to safer water, even when roads become impassable.

These actions directly respond to the risks identified in the anticipatory analysis: food depletion, water contamination, and prolonged isolation. Beyond immediate assistance, the water systems create lasting resilience by reducing exposure to waterborne diseases and strengthening community autonomy during the December-June isolation period.

We are deeply grateful to the donors who made this progress possible. Your support contributed to tangible, life-sustaining infrastructure and food security in communities that face recurrent climate shocks with limited state support. We will continue monitoring flood conditions and strengthening preparedness measures to protect families throughout the upcoming rainy season.
