Protect 1800 people on Kokwa Island from Malaria

By Lucy Mathenge | Project Assistant

Kokwa community once again is disappointed as the county government did not keep promise as earlier promised.  They had hoped that the dispensary will be in operational as from October as the promise was but to their surprise less has been done towards finishing, stocking and staffing the dispensary to serve the need community in Kokwa Island.  The volunteer nurse is working hard to assist the community which involves her walking through the rocky terrain during the night to assist the mothers delivering babies in their huts.  This has been a challenge since the Island is very rocky, dark and risks attack by the snakes, crocodile’s hippopotamus among other wild animals in the Island.  Most of the families in the Island live in mud grass thatched huts which are very small and shared by all family members therefore not very hygiene for delivery but since the Island does not have an operational maternity at the moment, these mothers have no choice but to deliver in their small huts sometimes without assistant by the nurse or qualified person.  Since they don’t have reliable source of income, they cannot afford to go to Marigat General Hospital where they can get delivery services.  For these and many other health related issues, the community appeals to the County Government and well-wishers to consider finishing, stocking and staffing the dispensary so that they can benefit from the services as it is their right.  The area is very dry at the moment and since they received very little rainfall last year, makes the situation even worse.  It is our hope that the county government will put into consideration Kokwa Community towards health issues and improve the current status.  We thank all the well-wishers who have considered supporting the community and we look forward to more support in this New Year.
