Protect 1800 people on Kokwa Islad from Malaria

By Lucy Mathenge | Project Assistant

Kokwa clinic project is still on although at a slower pace due to various challenges in the region but the people involved are working towards solving the challenges affecting the project. As a result of supporting Kokwa girls with recyclable sanitary towels, we are happy to report that this initiative has created a lot of impacts to the beneficiaries’ parents and teachers. The beneficiaries have reported the usefulness of the pads as they are easy to clean and reuse as well as maintaining their hygiene and their health. To the parents, it has saved them a lot of money as they used to strain to get the pads for their girls and others completely did not manage to provide to their girls. This resulted to girls using old clothes and other materials which affected their hygiene and health and most of them could not attend school during their periods again affecting their class performance. Teachers reported that girls’ performance in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (K.C.P.E) results, girls performed better than boys. Not that we are neglecting boys but we appreciate the positive attitude by the community towards educating girl child and also the girls appreciating the importance of education in the long term, this will result to improved living standards for the community.
In this year our partners Friends of Kenya Schools and Wildlife (FKSW) brought more sanitary pads for the girls in this region not only to benefit Kokwa School but even other girls in the surrounding schools. The partnership has also decided to sponsor all pupils in this region who passed their last year’s national exams to continue with secondary education. For those who will not secure vacancy in secondary schools, they will be sponsored in youth polytechnics. On behalf of Kokwa community we thank all the well-wishers who have contributed in realization of all these achievements and we welcome their support for more achievements this year.
