Summary

Twelve months after devastating floods in Pakistan, Relief International has aided 11,000 people with flood diversion walls, reviving livelihoods and offering protection. However, additional funding is urgently required to safeguard 15 more villages and 100,000 individuals from future floods and support more families with cash grants, technical assistance and training to rebuild businesses.

Challenge

The devastating floods in Pakistan affected 33 million people, leaving them without shelter or means of livelihood. Many people are still living in temporary shelters next to their damaged homes without enough food or clean drinking water. If another flood hits, the toll would be unimaginable. Local communities need a way to build resilience against future flooding as well as continue to rebuild their lives.

Solution

RI has already built three flood diversion walls in Dera Ismail Khan, Nowshera and Charsadda districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which were severely affected by the floods and monsoon rains. This has protected nine villages and 11,000 people from future flooding. RI has also supplied cash grants, technical assistance and training to rebuild businesses. There is an urgent need to shelter another 100,000 people by building another 3 walls and provide livelihood support to hundreds of other families.

Long-Term Impact

The diversion walls will protect 100,000 people from future flooding and livelihoods support will help 500 families rebuild their lives. Ahmed, a villager from Dera Ismail Khan says the flood diversion walls have "ensured our health and kept transportation channels accessible and intact".
