Summary

United Way Greater Nigeria (UWGN) is committed to building resilience in Northeast Nigeria. Through PIE-GDP, we've empowered displaced young people in Maiduguri since 2022 with training, grants, and tools to rebuild their lives. Recent Alau Dam flooding displaced over 200,000 families, destroying homes and livelihoods. This project provides immediate relief, restores livelihoods, and enhances disaster preparedness to help affected communities recover and regain stability.

Challenge

The collapse of the Alau Dam in Maiduguri, Borno State, caused flooding, displacing over 200,000 families and affecting more than 1 million people. This disaster destroyed homes, businesses, and infrastructure, leaving many without livelihoods. Among those impacted are youth previously empowered through UWGN's PIE-GDP program, who now face compounded challenges in rebuilding their lives. The urgent need is for immediate relief and sustainable recovery solutions in affected community.

Solution

The project provides immediate relief to displaced families with food, water, hygiene kits, clothing, and temporary shelter. Small businesses will be revitalized through equipment replacement, tools, materials, and grants in sectors like poultry, fashion, and animal husbandry. Skills-building workshops for beneficiaries and stakeholders will focus on disaster preparedness and economic recovery. Individuals will receive hygiene kits and sanitation education to reduce health risks.

Long-Term Impact

This project fosters resilience and self-reliance by restoring livelihoods and building capacity in the affected community. Grants, tools, and training will enable beneficiaries to rebuild sustainable businesses, ensuring long-term economic stability. Capacity building workshops will equip community members and stakeholders with disaster preparedness skills, reducing vulnerability to future emergencies. Improved health and sanitation practices will mitigate health risks & overall well-being
