New branch of children's library in East Jerusalem

Children join reading day in January

Madaa Creative Center's children's library continues to grow! Children come every day to the library to borrow books, hear stories, play games, do research for school, take creative writing courses, and more. Last year, with your support, they opened up another small branch in a different neighborhood of Silwan and purchased 200 new books in Arabic and English.

With the new branch and new books, the rate of borrowing increased by 60%!

In January, Madaa organized a special Reading Day. As one staff member explained "We chose a day for the library and reading at Madaa for several objectives, including: To introduce children to the library of Madaa, to broaden their knowledge of reading, to learn about educational values through stories, and to encourage them to read.”

The librarian at the Ein Al Lozeh branch described the day: “On Library Day we distributed books to the children; each child chose a story and read it. Then we gave out two files for each of them, the first file contains the elements of the story and the second one is for the child to write the new words s/he learned from the story, each child then explained the story s/he had read and the lessons s/he had learned from it. As for children under 8, we have read and explained the stories to them, on this day children learned how to listen and to express themselves.”

Madaa Libraries offer many activities for children such as: creative writing, puppet shows, cultural competitions, reading stories for children and discussing them. Additionally, the libraries provide children with the ability to borrow books.
