This June, we’re proud to spotlight a nonprofit taking strides to protect LGBTQ+ communities amid changing tides. The ILGA Database (created by nonprofit ILGA World) is a unique knowledge base on laws, human rights bodies, advocacy opportunities, and news related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. This allows activists, researchers, journalists, government members, and human rights institutions to have access to the facts they need (for free) to support LGBTQ+ rights in their respective capacities.
Data about and for populations that are historically left out is hard to find, often lost in webs of websites and outdated archives with broken (or removed) links. This IGLA World database brings all of the information together in one place so the people trying to protect and preserve LGBTQ+ rights can spend less time on the computer and more time doing the work that can actually make a difference.
One example of this kind of data and how it can be applied is a list of laws on LGBTQ+ rights in every country, divided into 18 legal categories with more than 100 topics. This can help human rights defenders easily grasp the legal landscape of the country they are trying to work in.
Data is more than numbers and figures—it is a screenshot of our current reality. This helps people understand the current moment so they can make more informed actions. Data is information, and information keeps us sovereign and informed. And YOU are helping keep the lights on for donor-powered data services like these. And for that, we can’t thank you enough!
Here’s what J. Andrew Baker, ILGA Fundraising and MEL Manager, wants you to know about your support:
“In a time when the rights of LGBTQIA+ people are under increasing threat worldwide, your support sends a powerful message of solidarity. It reminds us that we are not alone in this fight for equality and justice. Thank you for standing with us and fueling our commitment to protect and uplift LGBTQIA+ communities everywhere.”
We look forward to updating you with July’s featured project.
Until then,
