The ILGA World Database is a unique knowledge base on laws, human rights bodies, advocacy opportunities, and news related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics issues worldwide. The database provides vital information and knowledge for activists, governments, organisations, companies and others in their efforts to protect the rights of LGBTI people. The database and ILGA World's research efforts need your support to continue this important work.
The laws that criminalise consensual same-sex sexual activity, gender identity, or gender expression have become the cornerstone of societal discrimination and violence against all LGBTI people. These criminalising laws send the message that LGBTI persons are second or third-class citizens who deserve to be treated unequally. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated.
The ILGA World Database. Standing as the world's most extensive compilation of over 3,500 laws focusing on sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, and sex characteristics, it was recognised with a silver medal for data excellence at the Anthem Awards in January 2024. Our team of researchers consistently updates this dynamic database, providing up-to-date information that, due to its volume and complexity, is hard for the organisations and stakeholders we serve to obtain.
The Database addresses the historical challenge of accessing information on global LGBTI issues, offering an open-access and inclusive platform for activists, researchers, and human rights institutions. Its unique design provides detailed profiles for 193 UN Member States, 47 non-UN Member jurisdictions and numerous subnational jurisdictions. It presents essential information, advocacy opportunities, upcoming deadlines, and curated news from the ILGA World Monitor. It is utilised worldwide.
