This August, the Project of the Month spotlight is shining on a truly inspiring organization: Venerable Sydney Wellness Center. They’re on a mission to save lives and bring hope to Nigerian families by tackling preventable deaths among children.
In many African nations in West Africa, specialized children’s hospitals are few and far between. This includes Nigeria, where general hospitals are often miles from where children live. Often, by the time the child makes it to the center, it is too late. The situation is worsened by a severe shortage of medicines and qualified health specialists in many regions.
In June 2024, a national emergency was declared in Nigeria in response to a Cholera outbreak that killed more than 50 people. This month’s featured project, Build Children's Wellness Center in Nigeria, was launched the same month. The wellness centers play an important role in outbreaks like these as a primary way for people to access quality medical care. The funds from this month’s grant will help cover the costs of survey building and operation costs.
When Project Leader Nnenna Okoturo learned that the Venerable Sydney Children's Wellness Center had been selected as the August POMC, she shared that these funds will kick them off to the next level! “The funds will be used to do more free first aid training to several child care NGOs in Nigeria. It will be used to set up our first wellness center to provide free health & nutritional educational information to parents and older children in the villages in Nigeria,” she shared.
