Dear Project of the Month Club Member,
July’s featured project is cultivating peace and the art of living in Battaramulla, Sri Lanka. 14 years have passed since Sri Lanka’s long and brutal civil war that took more than 100,000 lives. Still, ethnic divisions and cycles of relational violence remain the experience for some children according to our partner Shanthi Maargam, the winner of this month’s grant round.
The organization pioneered a holistic youth center for students of all ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds, and sexual orientations. Their staff promotes resiliency by teaching yoga, mindfulness and meditation, and violence reduction. They offer gender-based violence and extremism prevention education and team up with parents and caregivers to build community networks that nurture positive youth development.
Shanti Maargam’s visionary center is currently raising funds through their micro-project, Sustaining the 'Art of Living' Youth Center, to cover the services that help children heal emotional traumas and find deeper levels of peace and resiliency.
When General Manager Razmina Razeen learned that Shanti Maargam was selected as the July POMC, they shared that these funds will allow them to continue and expand their counseling services. “This generous donation of $10,000 USD will support our activities aimed at positive youth development and skill-building and provide more educational sessions on gender-based violence and extremism prevention,” they said.
Thank you for supporting organizations like Shanthi Maargam making the world a better place.
With gratitude, and until next time,
