Dear Project of the Month Club Member,
When Hurricanes Ingrid and Manuel hit Guerrero state in Mexico in 2013, the mountainous soil was vulnerable to landslides due to years of deforestation and agrochemical use. Most of the state’s Indigenous population is settled in the region, and more than 230,000 people were affected by the storms. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic further undercut main income-generating activities like farming corn and coffee, hindering recovery efforts and fueling migration.
Cooperación Comunitaria A.C. is supporting communities still reeling from the repercussions of these disasters. The January Project of The Month, Building Resilience with Communities of Guerrero, is collaborating with 20 Me’phaa families to build reinforced adobe houses, which in turn will improve the families’ technical skills and resilience. The construction process will be accompanied by the reforestation of local tree varieties.
“We express our deepest gratitude and are happy to be part of this group of supportive and generous people,” Director of Fundraising Diana Cortese shared when she learned that Building Resilience with Communities of Guerrero had been selected as the Project of the Month. “The population of the Guerrero Mountain in Mexico has recently been affected by Hurricane Otis,” Diana explained. “It has destroyed crops and caused landslides in the mountain. The Fund will be essential for the recovery of the communities.”

Thank you for your commitment to a better world!
