Project Report: STI Testing and Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign
Introduction:
The Dihya Foundation conducted a comprehensive campaign on STI testing and cervical cancer awareness from January to March 2024. The project aimed to raise awareness about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and cervical cancer among women in Nigeria, particularly in rural and underserved communities. The campaign included educational workshops, community outreach programs, and free screening services to promote early detection and prevention.
Objectives:
1. Increase awareness about STIs and cervical cancer, their risk factors, and prevention methods.
2. Promote regular STI testing and cervical cancer screening among women.
3. Provide free screening services for STIs and cervical cancer.
4. Reduce stigma and misconceptions surrounding STIs and cervical cancer.
Activities:
1. Educational Workshops: The foundation conducted workshops in collaboration with local health authorities and community leaders. Topics included the importance of STI testing and cervical cancer screening, signs and symptoms, and treatment options.
2. Community Outreach: Volunteers visited schools and offices to distribute informational materials and engage with community members. They also organized interactive sessions to address questions and concerns.
3. Free Screening Services: The foundation partnered with local clinics to offer free STI testing and cervical cancer screenings. Women were provided with information about follow-up care and treatment options.
Results:
- Over 200 women attended the educational workshops, increasing their knowledge about STIs and cervical cancer.
- Approximately 120 women received free STI testing and cervical cancer screenings, with several cases of early detection.
- Community members reported reduced stigma and increased willingness to discuss reproductive health issues.
Challenges:
- Some people were afraid to know their satus and did not take part in the screening exercise for STI.
Recommendations:
- Continued education and awareness campaigns in rural and underserved communities.
- Increased access to healthcare facilities and affordable screening services.
- Collaboration with local leaders and organizations to address cultural barriers.
Conclusion:
The STI testing and cervical cancer awareness campaign conducted by the Dihya Foundation successfully increased awareness, promoted early detection, and reduced stigma surrounding these important health issues. Continued efforts are needed to ensure that women in Nigeria have access to quality healthcare and information to improve their reproductive health outcomes.
Acknowledgments:
