By Luke Clark | Project Director
I am sitting in Orlando airport about to head back to the UK following spending time with Bryce Hammond in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. We've had a very productive week planning the next steps of our project, visiting Atlantic Centre for the Arts (ACA) where the first exhibition is taking place, researching materials to build the architectural structure and finalizing the 3 week event and education schedule. It was an essential time for us to both work on the Progeny exhibition which opens on November 1st, 2013.
If you have received this email it is because you have donated to our project. Now Progeny is an official member on the Global Giving website (thanks to you!) we are required to submit 3 monthly reports to those who have donated. I believe Global Giving give everyone a chance to unsubscribe so please do so if you wish not to receive these updates.
In 2010 Bryce and I both started Progeny on a residency at ACA in New Smyrna Beach - an inter-disciplinary residency program where artists, musicians and writers were able to exchange ideas and collaborate. This opportunity led to Bryce and I working with ACA and a local honey company, Tropical Blossom Honey, where we decided to research bee colonies. We were kindly invited to the North American Beekeeping conference in Las Vegas followed by a road trip where we visited the almond pollination fields in Visalia, California. We somehow ended up in Mexico before returning back to the States to visit a beekeeper who looks after thousands of hives near Calexico.
Our Journey had some surprises along the way...not least, the hotel booking agent hotwire sending us to some "secret special deal hotels" where we ended up in Hooters in Las Vegas. It also sent us to another hotel in Mexico rather than us staying on the border of California as we had intended. Suffice it to say, we now expect the unexpected with this project.
We never thought that the project would lead to us building a large interactive sound installation. In the process of trying to secure the money to fulfil this ambition we realised we needed to give something back to the community. That was mostly the focus for this recent trip. We now have a calendar of events and rather than tell you about I will just list it below. It is a work in progress but nonetheless gives you a feel for what we are hoping to achieve:
Curatorial Panel | Wednesday, November 6 from 6:30–9pm
Dance Performance | Friday, November 8 from 6-9pm
Music Performance | Saturday, November 9 form 6-9pm
High School Education | November 11th-14th
Middle School Education | Saturday, November 16
Outreach Program | November 18th-21st
We are excited about this program. Our aim is to finalize the events and education by the end of August so that we can concentrate solely on building the structure and undertaking rehearsals from September until the Opening on November 1st.
Ok, I think that's all for now. Thank you everyone for supporting our project. And thank you to those who are continuing to donate. Your input is immensely important to us. If you can think of others who may be interested in our project and you are willing to pass along our details we would greatly appreciate it. Please reach out at any time.
Our very best,
Luke and Bryce
